Who are at-risk and incarcerated youth?
Currently, we do work with four prisons in the State of Louisiana. The youth that attend our programs are between the ages of 13 and 18 and come from throughout the state. When we look at the numbers and other statistics below, it's important remember that numbers are not people. This work is not about connecting with a population. It is about connecting with each individual who comes to the program to learn.
What do the numbers say?
According to the Juvenile Residential Facility Census Databook available through the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, in 2016 Louisiana currently had 579 public and 204 private facilities* in the juvenile corrections system. Nationally, there were 32,301 public and 13,266 private facilities* in use. The types of facilities juveniles can be assigned to include detention centers, long-term secure facilities, residential treatment centers, group homes, ranch/wilderness camps, shelters, diagnostic centers, boot camps, among other types of placements.

It's also important to remember that juvenile offenders do not have all the same rights as adults do. They aren't guaranteed the right to bail or to a public trial for example. They do, though, get additional protections like having their records sealed to the public and can qualify to have their records expunged when they turn 18 if they meet a particular set of criteria . It's also important to know that different states have different definitions of who should and should not be considered a juvenile in the eyes of the court.
